IAH-CECAP Continuing Medical Education at Enverga University On June 18, 2009, the collaboration of Kobe University and UP-PGH through the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network of the Philippines (CECAP) expanded its reach in another partner institution, Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, Lucena City. Another continuing medical education (CME) was spearheaded by the CECAP Director, Dr. Cecilia Ladines-Llave and her team of doctors. This event served as an avenue for research by Ms. Hitomi Hashimoto, a nurse and research fellow from Kobe University. Her study explored on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of nursing students regarding cervical cancer prevention. Dr. Jose Atienza, Vice President for External Affairs and the primary coordinator for this event from Enverga University-Lucena welcomed the participants who involved 118 nursing students from all year levels from the Enverga University campuses of Lucena and Candelaria. Madame Jasmin Enverga, Vice President of Enverga University gave an inspirational message and acknowledged the success of the University by having an international partner in Research through Kobe University and an advocacy through CECAP. Dr. Cecilia Ladines-Llave discussed the CECAP Initiative in the Philippines and encouraged the members of Enverga University to play an active role in this program. CECAP envisions incorporating the cervical cancer prevention through the Single Visit Approach (SVA) in the curriculum of the nursing and midwifery students. Dr. Jaycee Almaria, Program Manager of CECAP-Philippines gave an interactive lecture on What Every Woman Should Know About Cervical Cancer, discussing about the burden of the disease, cause, risk factors, signs and symptoms, disease progression and treatment. Primary Prevention Coordinator Dr. Grace Chan then discussed the perils of smoking, a risk factor of cervical cancer and ways to protect oneself from this disease through regular screening, healthy lifestyle and vaccination. Dr. Benilda Villenas, Vice President for Internal Affairs of Enverga University facilitated the open forum which engaged many students to ask questions to the resource speakers. Ms. Hashimoto summarized the activity by explaining the Interactive Activity of Health or IAH Program of the Kobe University Graduate School of Health Sciences and the cervical cancer burden and practices in Japan. Dr. Gina Motil, a Philippine Obstetric and Gynecological Society (POGS) member and gynecologic oncologist rendered her remarks in conclusion. Dr. Agripino Tullas, Officer-in-Charge of the Provincial Health Office of Quezon, was present in support of the collaborative event. See more photos of the event here.
